- Configuring Palm Internet Applications |
If you don't have Javascript enabled,
there are HTML links at the very bottom of every page.
|
This page
shows you how to configure your Palm Internet Applications (starting with e-mail)
once you've set up access to the Internet with your Palm
device and a cell phone.
Can Palm Internet
applications multitask? No. AvantGo, for example, will stay
on the page you are viewing if you wish to change to the mail application and
download mail. However, you can't change to your mail app. while AvantGo is
downloading and you can't change from (MultiMail Pro, at least) while it is
downloading.
But your connection will remain active. Any web app. keeps 'running' and
'connected'
as you change about, but you can't have multiple things downloading at once.
All of this stuff
assumes you have correctly configured your Palm and Cell
phone. |
Every application mentioned
below can be found at PalmGear
A. Sending and Receiving E-Mail
Cheap Option
1: Use the Palm 'stock' Mail application with ProxiMail/TopGun Postman
ProxiMail (or TopGun
Postman) is really just an application that makes your Palm send the e-mails you
compose on your Palm using the 'built-in' Mail application out to the web (more
specifically, a POP account).
The Mail application that cam with your Palm is the one that lets you sync your
desktop Inbox and Outbox with the Palm.
ProxiMail is freeware and does an okay job, I suppose. I only used it once quickly
before using MultiMail Pro. All you do compose your e-mails as normal using the Palm
'Mail' application and then go to the ProxiMail applications and use it to send/receive.
This app is designed to send and receive Email messages to a POP mail account on
the Internet. The big hassle with this is that e-mail messages from the last time
you checked your mail and that you have not deleted from the server are downloaded.
Can't find this on PlamGear at the moment. :-( Will keep you
updated... |
Cheap Option
2: Use the Eudora Internet Suite
Eudora 4.1 syncs fine with the Palm
provided conduit (just make sure you've enabled MAPI under Tools/Options).
Users have reported that when using Eudora
4.3.2 on the desktop with the Palm conduit they didn't see anything of much interest to
switch to the Eudora Internet Suitewith the existing Mail application meeting their
needs.
However, if you wish to send e-mail directly
from your Palm, try the Eudoras Internet Suite - you can't beat the price: FREE.
Note that a few users have reported various problems in Usenet recently that they related
to the EIS product. See how you go. Don't say I didn't give you all the
information you needed to make an informed decision. :-) |
Pay Money
Option: Use the amazing MultiMail Pro
|

MultiMail Pro. See how much
e-mail stuff fits on your Palm's little screen? Palm purchased Actualsoft (the
programmers) so you'll probably see this as a 'feature' of some kind in the future.
Maybe.
Umm...and to make an
underscore (one of these: _ ) when addressing an e-mail, the Graffiti shortcut is:
Tap and then draw a horizontal line left to
right and back to the left will
yield and underscore. Tap and then draw a horizontal line left to right will yield a
dash (-). This appears third screen in your graffiti hints (command-G). |
MultiMail
Pro is a briliant direct e-mail client for your Palm: you can send and receive e-mail eaasily from the
application. There are many, many features of Multimail Pro, but the best are (a)
you have the option to just download message headers first and then check off the message
bodies you may want to download - excellent for making sure bloated junk does not block up
your download time, and (b) a wide variety of 'plug-ins' that let you view all sorts of
e-mail attachments on your Palm. It supports NNTP, POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP. And supports MS Exchange, Novell
GroupWise, and Lotus Domino, (c) allows for multiple (up to 8) accounts.
MultiMail Pro comes
with a 'Wizard' feature that lets you set up you account quickly and easily.
You can also get the
MultiMail Conduit that lets you send and receive email during synchronization from
MultiMail Pro (as opposed to the Palm 'Mail' application). Supports attachments
(MAPI clients) as well as direct synchronization with your IMAP4 mail server. The
Windows Conduit has been updated to support email attachment conversions. Have your
desktop attachments converted to Palm viewable attachments. Now you can view most any file
attachment type you might receive! Excel, MSWord, PowerPoint, even Adobe Acrobat (PDF).
Check out the plugins here.
With MultiMail
Professional 3.1 you can now download messages up to 2MB in size. Install Palm
applications of virtually any size via email. No other Palm email client or web browser
currently offers this freedom.
If you set Outlook Express as your default
e-mail client, MultiMail will sync with it. Go to Acutalsoft's website to find out what
settings you need for your server.
You can also get your e-mail on my Palm and then from your PC computer by
selecting the option "Leave mail on server" in the MultiMail Preferences menu.

B. Setting up AvantGo (Web Browsing)

|
Download the AvantGo 'installer'
(AGCEClientSetup.exe) to your desktop (or whatever folder you whack these things in).
Double-click on AGCEClientSetup.exe and it will do its stuff. Once it tells you it
has finished, the AvantGo application is installed on your desktop (including the AvantoGo
conduits). You must then synchronise to get the AvantGo Palm applications onto to your
Palm and then synchronise again to download your content. Manage your content at AvantGo.
Off-Line Web Browsing Using AvantGo
This is totally cool if you want to catch up on your favorite web sites while communiting
or travelling. The premise of Avantgo is that it lets you manage and read web pages
that have been retrieved by your desktop PC and Internet connection. It does this
when you HotSync. You select a list of URLs or specially pre-fornmatted sites on the
Avantgo Web site - this occurs during the installation process. You can store up to
2 Meg of web pages on your Palm this way.
On-Line Web Browsing Using AvantGo
Avantgo pages are not restricted to the
width of the Palm screen (like MandWeb) so you can scroll through an entire Web
page (left/right, up/down). Just select from the AvantGo menu and enter the website you
wish to browse live whilst you have a live connection.

C.
Setting up Newsreaders
| Get Yanoff
with the Yanoff Java Conduit that updates the news articles in the Yanoff database on each
HotSync, by using your desktop's Internet connection and connecting to the news servers
that are specified in the Yanoff preferences. It also posts messages that you saved in
Yanoff. Freeware. Or PalmReader
(US$10) which does all of this more tightly. The trick is to correctly key in the
name of your news server on the desktop application. |
