Palm/Cell
Phone Communications
(Part 2 - Managing your Palm/Cell Phone) |
If you don't have Javascript
enabled, there are HTML links at the very bottom of every page.
This page shows you how to
manage your cell phone (address, calendar, etc) with your Palm.
A.
Software that enables you to manage your Nokia Cell Phone
Check out this site: 'Linking
your Nokia Phone with your Palm using IR: http://palm.linuxfr.org/NokiaEng.html
It supplies applications and
documentation of varying quality on:
Sending ringtones from Palm to
Nokia using IR (keep your eyes out for it: its not ready yet- US$20 shareware).
(NokiTone1.0.prc). So...nothing
is really available for the Palm for managing ringtones. However, the excellent
Logomanager (http://www.logomanager.co.uk)
can be used for both operator, ringtone, and startup graphic hacking. Try this site for free
ringtone sending: http://www.yourmobile.com.
IguanaSMS will send you free Nokia
operator logos via SMS.
Sending Nokia Group Graphics
or Operator Logos from Palm to Nokia using IR (7110, 8210 or 8850 and, I think, 8110 with
a newer firmware version). GFX2Nokia (Freeware) is simple to use but very fiddly:
you also need desktop PC application 'GFXRead' to load Operator Logos into GFX2Nokia on
the Palm (people who have done this would know about .ngg or .nol files). Allows you to
modify and design new Operator logos on your Palm. (GFX2Nokia.prc)
NokiaGGE (US$20 shareware)
does the same as GFX2Nokia but note that as far as I can tell, NokiGGE works only for
Group Graphics with the 8210 and not for Operator logos (you also have to set the phone
type to 'old'). Interesting program with an okay interface (a little
clumsy) but priced at $20.00 too high.
(NokiaGGE.prc)
NokiaTest is a waste of time
and shouldn't exist. Its only real purpose is for older Nokia phones with IR (read
6110/61xx) that do not have the 'out of the box' setting to beam address and datebook
details into a Palm and vice versa. A very average program that
highlights how desperate Nokia 6110 owners are for software to communicate with their
(outdated) phones: if Infra Red is THAT important to you, get an updated Nokia phone.
....and a few other applications
- have a look (remember, download these from PalmGear of the site mentioned above).

(note: if you want Nokia
operator logos, I have a zip file of 180 of 'em on this page...for
more operator logos, just run a Web search. I've lso got several hundred Nokia ringtones
on that page, too) |
(note: for those looking at the page to work out how to use LogoManager
on 82xx/88xx series Nokia phones - you may experience problems if you are using DirectIR.
You just need to activate 2 player snake mode. If you have the Windows IrDA drivers
and IR monitor installed, then you need to select 'use IrDA drivers' in V1.1 of
LogoManager).

Software that enables you to manage your Cell Phone 'address book'
Now, there is also software
that enables you to manage your Cell Phone 'address book' - usually just
names and numbers are imported into the cell phone address book. The
following is a list of available software the Good Doctor is competent to talk about:
(I'm using a Palm Vx (OS 3.3 and IR update) and a Nokia 8210).
Phone MGR
(Handphone) appears it would do this very well indeed, with a simple and intuitive user
interface. But this does not fully work on my Palm Vx and Nokia 8210 although I confirm
that all other IRdA communications between the 8210 and Palm Vx work fine (in particular,
the beaming of phone number or SMS details to the phone do not work - fail for 'time out'
errors). This is all a great shame as Handphone is by far the best application
currently available. Looks like it will easily sync Palm and Cell Phone numbers,
allow quick sending of SMS and query the phone for status information. Handphone allows
simple access to phone and SIM memory.
So: A problem with the Handphone application! If I remember correctly, Handphone was
incompatible with Palm OS 3.3 but some people got it to work.
It worked fine with OS 3.1.
Also: Beware! Handphone
DOES NOT return tech support e-mail in my experience but will apparently provide service
after a few calls.
AND..on your Palm, got
to 'Preferences', 'Serial/IR' and select 'Serial via infra red' (the right-most box).
You must do this or HandPhone's applications won't work.
I've been informed that 'new' versions of Handphone don't suffer from this
problem. This was not the case for the evaluation copy I downloaded in mid-March
2000.
NEWS FLASH: Handphone is OVER!
End of Life (EOL)
Notice for Smartcode's Palm Product Line at http://www.smartcodesoft.com
PageNOW! (which
does SMS send/receive and TAP/SNPP send) also appears to do everything I want to do (well,
at least the public beta v2.0) but has poor documentation. Its functionality appears to be
similar to Phone MGR (above). The initial version (v1.0) of PageNOW was a good 'beta' but
was certainly not something a company should have been asking consumers to pay for.
Brian Hall (the programmer of PageNOW!) said this in early March:
"The documentation for PageNOW! will be updated when we release v2.0. The 2.0
manual will be a full user guide with installation, usage, and troubleshooting sections
and in Adobe PDF format. The current beta includes some quick start notes in text/html
format, and we also have the manual for the previous release (1.1) in Acrobat PDF format.
Also note that in addition to SMS send/receive, PageNOW! can also send via a TCP
connection (such as Minstrel, PPP via GSM, etc) using the SNPP protocol and using a modem
connection and the TAP protocol. TAP and SNPP are widely used to send messages to text
pagers. So the same app can be used for both paging and SMS.
Pretty much all that is left to finish up 2.0 is we are adding a "send
SMS" screen where you can select a phone # from the address book and/or enter one
manually rather than using the PageNOW! database of phones."
Sounds good...apparently it will be released quite soon (early April, 2000). Version
2.0 of PageNOW! is in Public Beta and will support SMS Send/Receive via a GSM Phone. Keep
up to date with this application at: http://www.markspace.com/pagenow_pilot.html

And this is what he said in a post in Early May,
2000:
PageNOW! allows you to send
and receive messages, reminders, schedules and more to pagers and supported PCS/GSM
digital phones.
Features of PageNOW! for PalmOS:
- Supports all paging services (Using the industry-standard TAP (via modem) and SNPP (via
TCP) protocols)
- Supports all SMS devices (Using ETSI/GSM standard protocols)
- Supports Palm clip-on modem as well as external and IR modems
- Supports send/receive of SMS via GSM/PCS Phones (either via GSM Snap-On or with a phone
that has an internal or IR modem such as Nokia 9000, Ericsson 888, etc)
- Unlimited number of paging/sms services (common ones pre-defined)
- Unlimited number of pager users
- Message Splitting: Splits long messages into a series of smaller ones
- Character/Page Counter: Tracks the length and number of pages that will be sent
- Smart Dialing: Configure numbers for reaching an outside line, credit card calling, etc.
- Greeting/Signature:
- Optionally add text to the beginning or end of each page sent
See: http://www.markspace.com/pagenow_pilot.html
As for GSM Tool,
it works (I've tested it), but the interface is truly shitty (no, really, you should try
it to see how bad I mean) to use. No offence to the programmer who obviously got a
difficult program to work well - perhaps the next update will make it usable by mere
mortals. No-one on Usenet seems to have anything else to say about this application...do you? In fairness, I should say
this this application works and actually does all that it says it will do,
which is still of note when dealing with the more esoteric 3rd party Palm apps.
Note that I've had feedback from a user of this app. that it overwrote his SIM
card before he uploaded the numbers although it was fine once the numbers were uploaded
(be careful if there are numbers on your SIM that are not in your Palm)...I don't know any
more about this, but, as ever, the Good Doctor Salami wants you to be safe, happy and
aware.
Check out the author's page at http://www.gsmtool.com/. He's updated it, so see if you think
its cool.

C. Nokia 7110 and HandPhone Applications (see above)
There are many
different versions of Handphone. The download evaluations versions (1.0.4) and most
versions "found" on the Internet DO NOT operate with the Palm V, OS 3.0 with IR
enhancements or OS 3.3 with Nokia 7110. It appears that information is sent from
HandPhone via IR to the device but the Nokia 7110 does not understand it.
There was a new Version of
HandPhone that was modified to work with Palm V OS 3.3, version 1.2.1. To my
surprise this works wonders with the Nokia 7110.
Phone Mgr
1. 'Status' operates correctly, displaying 'Signal Quality', 'Battery Charge' and 'Phone
Activity';
2. 'Information' works correctly, displays Model, Serial Number, Software Revision etc
(this just sends AT0-AT5 commands!)
3. Mobile, SIM and Fixed numbers from phone work correctly, but Last numbers do not,
Storage Unavailable.
Phone SMS
1. Sends okay.
2. Retrieve from Phone is weird, appearing to download some messages that exist on the
phone. I believe the problems that exist with HandPhone, are incompatibilities with the
new Nokia 7110 and Firmware Issues, I've been unsuccessful with most SMS/IR/Cable products
including the popular LogoManager and Nokia Data Suite 3.0, which doesn't work at all with
the Nokia 7110, hence while Nokia will be releasing NDS 4.0 which will work with Nokia
7110.
I've also found that you can beam contacts direct from Phone to Palm and vice versa (uses
business card *.vcf format if beamed to PC) so this is better as it takes all fields, all
numbers, notes and e-mail address. So it makes Phone_Mgr redundant, but the Phone_SMS is
excellent. Despite it doesn't download all messages from phone. Its a shame that I read
that Smartcodesoft will be ending development of these products, HandFax, HandWeb,
HandMail, and HandPhone are excellent products, that I use (although, rather on the heavy
side, memory that is!), I'll just have to get a Vx!
This information is
summarised from a very helpful e-mail to me from Andy Hancock who works for Cyrus
Consultants who are are IT Gurus involved in large scale Thin Client deployment for large
corporations (Telecoms, Defence and Local Government). Cyrus' interest in Palm
V/Nokia 7110 is Mobile Comms/Mobile eCommerce, and WAP. They are currently involved at
developing WAP access from Palm V via Nokia 7110. Thanks Andy! |
