Genuflection's of 80s Music, Part 1:
'Two Tribes' 12" version by Frankie Goes to Hollywood

The most volcanic aspect of this double-pulse aural hammer is, of course, the table on the rear of the 12" mix (with Reagan/Gorbachev on the front) depicting in ultra 80s cold war clinicism the effects of a global thermonuclear war with entries ranging from 'Deaths from radiation poisoning/fallout' to 'Deaths from starvation' to 'Blast Deaths' and to the bonechilling 'Deaths from Synergies' (the strange planet-murder born of the unknown inter-relationships of all these things).

...and the picture of the chick in the 80s t-shirt holding the baby.

What a mix.

These pimply teen morons sweating away in cargo pants in clubs to cheap disposable techno think they're at the forefront of something new.

Fuck them.

We were there then.

Frankie!

Genuflections of 80s Music, Part 2: 'Dear God' by XTC

Andy Partridge (XTC) is an uber-cool 80s legend with cool glasses and haircut and sang 'Dear God' in a melodic monotone that spoke deeply of the trance-like practice of modern organised religion. The use of the child in the song and video was masterful and very groovy. Virgin records fucked them about a bit, and America did that puritarian thing it does so well by getting all upset about popular music questioning the relevance of organised religion and the role of a God in 'Dear God' from (I think) 1986's 'Skylarking' album.

Which is strange for a country premised on libertarianism and freedom of speech.

XTC is totally awesome and mega influential to lots of other bands (cf. Blur). They deserve an ornate temple in 80s pop Babylon. If you do not know them, find them and listen...'Dear God' will fuck you up just a little.

Dear God,
I don't know if you noticed, but...
your name is on a lot of quotes in this book,
and us crazy humans wrote it -
you should take a look.

Genuflections of 80s Music, Part 3:
Together in Electric Dreams (by Georgio Moroder and Phil Oakey)

"I only knew you for a while I never saw your smile 'Til it was time to go Time to go away (time to go away) Sometimes it's hard to recognise Love comes as a surprise And it's too late It's just too late to stay Too late to stay CHORUS: We'll always be together However far it seems (Love never ends) We'll always be together Together in Electric Dreams Because the friendship that you gave Has taught me to be brave No matter where I go I'll never find a better prize (Find a better prize) Though you're miles and miles away I see you every day I don't have to try I just close my eyes I close my eyes CHORUS repeat and ad lib to fade"

In a particularly awesome score, Doctor Salami found
a Japanese tape version of the 'Electric Dreams' soundtrack in a St Vincent DePaul Society bin on Glebe Point Road in Sydney, Australia!

It looks totally 80s cyberpunky!

Check out the scanned cover...(click to enlarge)

And then there were the original lyric inserts!  Volcanic!
