"Caring for Australian Native Birds"

by Heather Parsons

What is in it?

The book is a reference text for the care and rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned birds. The many beautiful and remarkable native birds of Australia often fall victim to the impacts of humans - the destruction and fragmentation of natural habitat, attacks by introduced predators, pesticides, cars, power lines, barbed-wire fences and fishing lines all take their toll. Now there is a book that has been designed as the essential handbook for those among us that want to redress the balance by restoring these victims to their rightful place in the wild.

Caring for Australian Native Birds covers the ethics of caring for wild birds, basic principles of identification, anatomy, behaviour, housing needs, feeding, including how to breed food insects etc and how to avoid imprinting. First aid is covered in detail as part of the basics of rehabilitation and preparing a bird for return to its natural world.

Detailed care plans are provided for birds from all of the major ecological niches, including insectivores of various types; nectarivores; granivores; frugivores and carnivores ranging from waterbirds and seabirds to raptors. This wonderful reference for all bird rehabilitators contains lots of other information that will make it an essential item in every bird rehabilitator's library.
